Ribonucleoprotein granules have been implicated in the pathology of neurodegenerative disorders and the formation of memory, however, the underlying biochemical mechanisms that facilitate these processes are poorly understood. Intriguingly, recent work has demonstrated that m6A-modified RNA is enriched in ribonucleoprotein granules and that the main cytoplasmic m6A-binding protein YTHDF1 is able to promote and stabilize granule assembly. To investigate the role of m6A RNA methylation in neuronal ribonucleoprotein granule formation we aim to conduct proteomic proximity labelling studies in cell culture models in conjunction with learning and memory experiments in Drosophila.
We seek to appoint a Research Assistant with a background in protein biochemistry and/or molecular neuroscience. The project is a collaboration between the Claridge-Chang lab (www.claridgechang.net) at Duke-NUS Medical School and the Manser lab at IMCB, A-Star (https://www.a-star.edu.sg/imcb/). The applicant will be employed by Duke-NUS Medical School and primarily supervised by the lead investigator Stanislav Ott. Research duties will primarily involve the creation of tissue culture models and BioID constructs. The projected start date of the project is September 2021. An ideal candidate will have:
1. A high level of motivation and a keen interest in neuroscience and/or biochemistry.
2. A B.S. or equivalent degree in a relevant field.
3. Work experience in tissue culture, construct design, subcloning methods, confocal microscopy
4. Some theoretical knowledge of biochemistry and/or neuroscience
5. Computer skills for recording, analyzing and organizing data.
6. Willingness to work closely with other scientists and an ability to quickly learn new techniques.
7. Project management skills and the ability to work harmoniously with a diverse workforce.
8. Experience in scientific sourcing & procurement.
The main duties will include: planning; organising; conducting; and communicating research studies within the overall scope of the research project. In particular, duties would include—but are not limited—to the following:
1. To conduct research on the above-described project using the above-described methods and others as necessary.
2. To learn new methodologies when necessary or useful.
3. Maintain experimental progress.
4. To effectively analyse your results by applying qualitative and quantitative techniques.
5. To acquire and maintain knowledge of the literature relevant to the project.
6. To regularly communicate your results to other lab members.

8. To share responsibility for the housekeeping of the laboratory areas and general maintenance tasks.
9. To conduct scientific sourcing and procurement.
